Pole Vaulting: A Guide to the Basics
What is Pole Vaulting?
Pole vaulting is a track and field event in which an athlete uses a long and flexible pole to jump over a raised bar. The pole is usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber and is typically between 13 and 18 feet long. The athlete holds the pole in one hand and plants it into a metal box known as the "planting box" before taking off and jumping over the bar.
The Pole Vault Box
The pole vault box is a metal box that is buried in the ground at the takeoff point. The athlete must plant their pole into the box before jumping. The box is designed to help the athlete achieve a stable and powerful takeoff.
Pole Vault Regulations
There are a number of regulations that govern pole vaulting, including:
- The athlete must clear the bar without knocking it off.
- The athlete must plant their pole inside the planting box.
- The athlete must not touch the bar with their body or clothes.
- The athlete must land on their feet on the landing pad.
